The project was built in a historic neighborhood, which required special approvals before proceeding. Orion provided pre-construction services over a 4-year period while the facility design was matched to a changing program and fundraising constraints.

Work on the site began in August 2012 with the removal of the former Junior League Children’s Hospital Building. Site preparation on the 6-acre property began in November.

The new facility is an 18,000 square foot, single-story structure consisting of foundations and slab on grade, structural steel and bar joist frame clad with brick and exterior insulating finish system. The roof is reflective, adhered membrane. The design features numerous changes in the exterior wall surfaces and multiple roof levels. Clerestory windows figure prominently into the appearance and function of the building, allowing natural light into interior spaces.

Site work included 104 parking spaces, retention of a number of large trees, and new landscaping was added to the entrance. Hardscape features include a fountain, outdoor seating, and a walking trail. The facility functions as a treatment and counseling center for adults and children dealing with behavioral and substance abuse. One large room is made available as a community meeting room for neighborhood events.
