Orion Says
'Happy Retirement' to One of its Founding
Leaders

Richard Cooper, Chairman and CEO of Orion
Building Corporation, retired at the end of
March, after 42 years in the construction
industry.
Richard graduated from Vanderbilt University
with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in
1969.
After working for Tennessee
Department of Transportation from 1969 to
1972, he worked at Culbert Construction,
where he worked with Rick Daughrity, Randall
Gill, and the late Martin Roberts, Jr., and
the late Robert C. H. Mathews, Jr.
In 1983, the five joined together and
opened Orion Building Corporation to provide
construction management and general
contracting services to the Middle Tennessee
area.
Richard's dedication to Orion and its
philosophy is evident in the many projects
on which he has contributed his time and
talents.
His resume includes work at Belle
Meade Plantation, Cheekwood Mansion and
Museum of Art, The University of the South,
Fisk University, and his alma mater,
Vanderbilt University.
Richard's wealth of knowledge and
project management resulted in over 20
project awards for Orion.
Richard
has been active in Construction
Specifications Institute, where he was
elevated to Fellow in 2002.
Having served in numerous offices,
locally and regionally, he most recently
served as Institute Vice President from 2007
to 2008.
