Orion Says 'Happy Retirement' to One of its Founding Leaders

Gayle and Richard

Richard Cooper, Chairman and CEO of Orion Building Corporation, retired at the end of March, after 42 years in the construction industry.

Richard graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1969.  After working for Tennessee Department of Transportation from 1969 to 1972, he worked at Culbert Construction, where he worked with Rick Daughrity, Randall Gill, and the late Martin Roberts, Jr., and the late Robert C. H. Mathews, Jr.  In 1983, the five joined together and opened Orion Building Corporation to provide construction management and general contracting services to the Middle Tennessee area.

Richard's dedication to Orion and its philosophy is evident in the many projects on which he has contributed his time and talents.  His resume includes work at Belle Meade Plantation, Cheekwood Mansion and Museum of Art, The University of the South, Fisk University, and his alma mater, Vanderbilt University.  Richard's wealth of knowledge and project management resulted in over 20 project awards for Orion.

Richard has been active in Construction Specifications Institute, where he was elevated to Fellow in 2002.  Having served in numerous offices, locally and regionally, he most recently served as Institute Vice President from 2007 to 2008.

"I take much pride in what we have created here at Orion over the past 28 years.  I am confident that Orion will continue to grow and be a premier provider of construction services through the continued leadership of Rick Daughrity as President, Randall Gill as Executive Vice President, and J Moseley as Secretary and Chief Financial Officer."
